Laboratory Manager at Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) - French in Maiduguri, Borno

Primary goal

• Organizing, arranging and carrying out laboratory initiatives and directing the laboratory employees according to MSF procedures, guard measures and hygiene guidelines, in order to assist the MSF medical team in the diagnosis of patients’ diseases.

Role summary

• Engaging in the project organizing and client engagement and analyzing the laboratory financial plan as required, in order to assist MSF’s medical initiatives.
• Making sure the adherence of MSF hygiene and safety procedures, both individually and collectively in addition to informing employees of current biological risks.
• Executing laboratory tests and carrying out sample collection (serology, hematology, biochemistry, bacteriology, parasitology...) in accordance with prescriptions in addition to making sure that quality assurance tests are carried out routinely.
• Informing the doctor of the outcomes of the tests and keeping a document of the evaluation with data from patients.
• Making sure proper management (cleaning, servicing & maintenance, organizing) of all laboratory tools and the adequate stock of needed tools and material in order to prevent inventory-outs. This comprises being in charge of all necessary automatic instrument calibration, making sure that no material is taken out of laboratories without prior approval, and carrying out a proper storage system and terms, stock, etc.

• In the absence of a Laboratory Manager, making sure proper registration and the needs of all lab-associated initiatives, and executing a accurate use of the connected management instrument (EpyTryp, Etc.).

• Executing all examinations and clinical tests according to the defined methods while
• Following the different standard Mini-Lab procedures and standardized processes.
• In particular, this position includes recognizing micro-organisms and executing antimicrobial exposure running test.

Post-running test:

• Comprehension the analysis of test outcomes and the return of outcomes.
• Being skilled in the Mini-Lab computer system (Mini-LIMS) in order to guarantee that the data collected at each step is logged;
• Preserving the direct work environment (desk) according to the strategic guidance and carrying out all the duty, servicing & maintenance, and readings in accordance with and adhering with the defined work strategy;
• Noting any non-conformities connected with tests, tools, or more generally to the process of the MiniLab as a whole, and status updates these to managers;
• Status updates any applicable information connected with laboratory processes and any challenges regarding tests being carried out correctly to the direct supervisor;
• Making sure that samples and all infectious waste produced by the Mini-Lab are disposed of correctly in accordance with established procedures and defined safety regulations
• Supervising the inventory in the Mini-Lab using the accessible assets;
• Comprehension the record management setup in the laboratory;

Inventory:

• Supervising QA (within and outside the organization quality regulates);
• Knowing how to find assist if there is a system failure in running test ability.

Supervising Processes:

• Collecting and analysing laboratory activity data;
• Supervising activity, quality and epidemiological indicators;
• Drafting all types of documentation for supervising indicators on a every month and yearly basis.

Qualifications

• Education: Crucial Academic qualification as a Lab technician.
• Expertise: At least 2 years operating expertise in a laboratory, ideally as a Lab Technology.
• Preferred in MSF or another NGO, preferred in a clinical laboratory.
• Languages: Local language and purpose language crucial.
